October 21—Author Talk—Josh Ruebner discusses his book Shattered Hopes: Obama’s Failure to Broker Israeli-Palestinian Peace.
October 28—Book Review—The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumphs by Ryan Holiday & Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Reviewer: Scott C. Jarzombek, MLS, Director, Albany Public Library.
November 4—Program—Boss Billy, Mr. Smith and Honest Abe: New York Acquires the Emancipation Proclamation presented by Paul Mercer, MA, MLS, Senior Librarian, NYS Library.
November 11—Book Review—Smaller Faster Lighter Denser Cheaper: How Innovation Keeps Proving the Catastrophists Wrong by Robert Bryce. Reviewer: Sumner Shapiro, semi-retired arbitrator & former adjunct professor.
November 18—Book Review—Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou. Reviewer: Carolyn McLaughlin, President of Albany Common Council.
November 25—Book Review—Land of Second Chances: The Improbable Rise of Rwanda’s Cycling Team by Tim Lewis. Reviewer: Marggie Skinner of The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza.
December 2—Book Review—Shot All to Hell: Jesse James, the Northfield Raid, and the Wild West’s Greatest Escape by Mark Lee Gardner. Reviewer: Nancy Dover, retired from the NYS Department of Health & former treasurer of the Friends of APL
December 9—Book Review—Maus: A Survivor’s Tale I & Maus : A Survivor’s Tale, II: And Here My Troubles Began, two graphic novels by Art Spiegelman. Reviewer: Nancy Rosenblum, retired specialist in human resources & labor relation and an Episcopal clergyman.
December 16—Panel Discussion—Gifts for Grandchildren: What’s New in Children’s Books. Moderator: Mary Beth Earley, MLS, Head of Youth Services, APL.
December 23—Holiday Concert by The Albany High School Select Choir directed by Brendan Hoffman. Comic Prelude by Sundesh Naik-Bengali, PhD.
December 30— Book Review—Brave Genius: A Scientist, A Philosopher, and Their Daring Adventures from the French Resistance to the Nobel Prize by Sean B. Carroll. Reviewer: Jonathan Skinner, PhD, retired statistician & recording secretary for the Friends of APL.
