Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Education and Acting State Librarian, Jeffrey W. Cannell, extends his warm appreciation to Chairperson Sarah Conrad Weisman and all current and former members of the NOVELNY Steering Committee as the work of the committee comes to a close effective May 15, 2012.
“The New York State Library is committed to building on the outstanding work of the Steering Committee going forward and will seek to continuously improve and expand the e-resources available to New Yorkers through this high value/high impact statewide program in the coming years,” said Cannell.
Announcement of New York Online Virtual Electronic Library (NOVELNY) electronic resource offerings for 2012-2013 will be made in the near future.
On April 24, the Board of Regents enthusiastically accepted a new statewide policy document for library services: Creating the Future: A 2020 Vision and Plan for Library Service in New York State; Recommendations of the New York State Regents Advisory Council on Libraries to the New York State Board of Regents.
“With the adoption of a new statewide vision and plan for library services, this seems like a good time to bring the work of the NOVELNY Steering Committee to conclusion,” said Weisman. “The Board of Regents has directed the State Librarian to work with the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries and others to develop implementation strategies and an action plan,” said Weisman, “and I anticipate that there will be numerous opportunities for the library community to contribute ideas, time and talent going forward.”
Leaders from all types of libraries have participated in the Steering Committee’s work since then State Librarian Janet Martin Welch appointed the first NOVELNY Steering Committee in 2002. The Steering Committee played a key role in assisting the State Library with implementation of NOVEL New York Online Virtual Electronic Library: Libraries Expanding Information Access for New Yorkers in the New Century. The creation of NOVEL was the first recommendation in the 2000 Regents Commission on Libraries report "Meeting the Needs of All New Yorkers."
The Steering Committee worked tirelessly to evaluate database products, survey users for feedback and represent the interests of New York’s diverse library community. Several notable efforts were conducted with the advice and assistance of the Committee, including, but not limited to:
o development of a statewide communications plan and publicity toolkit materials for the database program;
o driver license access and fashioning of the NOVELNY portal;
o testing of federated search; and
o the creation and revision of the NOVELNY Ready Levels Table.

Statewide Internet Library Levels Table Revised
The New York State Library wishes to thank all members of the library community who provided comments on the proposed revisions to the Statewide Internet Library Levels (formerly NOVELny-Ready Levels). The NOVELny Steering Committee was supportive of these revisions, especially Michael Santangelo, who worked directly with staff at the State Library.

Comments Sought on Proposed NOVEL-Ready Levels
The NOVELNY Steering Committee invites comments by May 27, 2011 on proposed revisions to the "Statewide Internet Library Levels Table." This table (formerly called the "NOVELNY-Ready Library Levels Table") outlines the current library technology requirements for Basic, Advanced and Leader levels and is intended to assist libraries in keeping current with technology trends.
The proposed revisions to the table update the technology requirements for public, school, academic and special libraries. Libraries meeting these requirements are recognized by the New York State Library and by their library system as being "Statewide Internet Library-Ready."

STATE LIBRARY ANNOUNCES ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS FOR NOVELNY

Products were competitively selected to provide the broadest array of desired content for the best value given current resources.
Consideration of comments from the field (witness the restoration of health content) and priority subjects were weighed in the decision.

New York State Library Seeks Nominations
The New York State Library is seeking, by June 30, recommendations for membership in two important groups: (1) the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries and (2) the NOVELNY Steering Committee.
1. The Regents Advisory Council on Libraries advises the New York State Board of Regents on State policy regarding the New York State Library, library development programs, legislation and library aid programs. The Council works with the officers of the State Education Department in developing a comprehensive statewide library and information policy and makes recommendations to the Regents concerning the implementation of the program.
The Board of Regents will appoint two Regents Advisory Council members to serve five-year terms from October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2015. The Council meets four times a year: January (conference call), April (Board of Regents meeting in Albany), September (NYC) and December (NYC). Members of the Regents Advisory Council are leaders in a wide variety of endeavors across the State, including business, human services, education, and libraries. State Library: 3-month extension to NOVELny license agreements
The New York State Library is pleased to announce that all of the products in the current NOVELNY initiative will be continued through June 30, 2010. This is a response to recommendations last year about improving the alignment of NOVELNY license agreements with the academic and school years.
State Library staff and the NOVELNY Electronic Collections Advisory Team of the Steering Committee are currently reviewing possible options for the 2010-2011 year (July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011). A separate announcement of 2010/11 products in NOVELNY will be made shortly.

NOVELNY USE CONTINUES TO CLIMB IN 2009
Bernard A. Margolis, New York State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries announced this week that New Yorkers searched the New York Online Virtual Electronic Library over 35.5 million times since July 2008. This represents a 20 percent increase in the number of searches over the prior year.
NOVELNY is a "virtual library" that connects New Yorkers in every community to state-of-the-art online information without regard to economic, geographic or physical barriers. This convenient online library includes a wide variety of full-text resources - books, magazines, newspapers, research and reference resources and is available to New York State residents with no fees.
New Yorkers can access NOVELNY 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by logging on with a public library card or with a New York driver license or non-driver ID. Over 5,600 libraries across the State now participate in this statewide pilot project, which is coordinated by the New York State Library located in Albany, New York.
The NOVELNY pilot project is supported with temporary federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds provided to the New York State Library by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

NOVELny databases FAQ for 2009/10
Information on the databases available through NOVELny beginning April 1, 2009 is now available on the novelnewyork.org site. Currently the FAQ includes the list of databases that will be provided through NOVELny, a list of databases that will not be continued, and a description of the database selection process.
