brary Board Calls Emergency Meeting for May 19

The Albany Public Library Board of Trustees has called an emergency meeting on Thursday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Delaware Branch Library. The board will discuss Tuesday’s budget vote.

The Delaware Branch Library is located at 331 Delaware Avenue.

APL Names New Executive Director

The Albany Public Library (APL) Board of Trustees appointed Carol A. Nersinger as the organization’s executive director at its regular meeting May 12.

Andrew Bechard named to library board

Attorney Andrew Bechard is the newest member of the Albany Public Library board of trustees.

Bechard, who was among 17 people to run for the board last year was sworn in [last week] to the seat left vacant by the death of James Gallagher. In May, the winner of an election will serve the year then remaining on Gallagher's term...

When he ran for the library board of trustees last year, Bechard created a Web site. The site still exists and provides background on his thoughts about the library's role in the community, he said.

Don't forget, the library will be closed this Saturday, Sunday and Monday in honor of the Labor Day holiday.

The Albany Public Library Board of Trustees has moved its next meeting from Monday, September 8th to Wednesday September 10th. It's still slated for 5:30PM on the third floor of the Main Library and, as always, is open to the public.

Trustee vacancy

Have you ever thought about serving as a Trustee of the Library? Well, now you have your chance to be appointed.

Due to the untimely passing of library trustee and Board President Jim Gallagher, there is a vacancy on the Board. The Trustees are soliciting letters of interest from residents interested in being appointed to this seat. Visit the APL website or stop into your local Albany Public Library to learn how you can become our next trustee.

Three Candidates for APL Trustee Seat

Albany Public Library will be asking City of Albany voters to vote to fill one vacant seat on the Library Board of Trustees in the May 20th Albany City School District Election.

There will be three candidates on the ballot.
Charles Carr is self-employed with a background in facilities management. A lifelong resident of Albany, he and his two sons regularly use the Delaware Branch.
Jose Lopez is an assistant teacher for people with disabilities and a long time Albany resident.
Lois Parsons, the incumbent, is also a long time resident of Albany. She has worked in the nursing field and has been involved in fundraising for neighborhood associations.

The Trustee vacancy was created by the passing of longtime Board member John Bach and has been temporarily filled by the Library Board’s appointment of Lois Parsons until the next election. The candidate receiving the largest number of votes in the election will serve the balance of Mr. Bach’s term, which expires on June 30, 2009.

Vote May 15

I urge Albany residents to vote for the 4 open trustee positions (out of 9) on Tuesday, May 15, 7 am - 9 pm. Get details about polling locations and bios of all 17 candidates.

You can also check out the blog of the library's union, AFSCME Local 3933, here for a posting of each candidate's answers to a questionnaire compiled by the union.

There are actually three newly open positions (5-yr term) and one 3-yr remainder of a term. Also, there are two incumbents on the ballot, Deborah Williams-Muhammad and Mary Ellen O'Connor.

Please vote and thus participate in the future direction of the Albany Public Library!

Four Trustee Seats Open for Election

Any Albany resident who is a registered voter is eligible to run for the Albany Public Library Board of Trustees. There are 4 seats available, and the election takes place on May 15. Candidates must collect a minimum of 99 valid signatures, file their petitions with the school district clerk by 4:30 p.m. April 17, and provide a copy of their nominating petitions to Interim Library Director Tim Burke.
