By The Book: RA in a Dynamic World

Is your library considering going Dewey-free? How do you provide RA services to kids when there’s no children’s librarian available? What does the future of RA look like?
Join Albany Public Library in celebrating the sixth annual By the Book Readers’ Advisory Conference! The featured speaker is Cynthia Orr, winner of the 2004 American Library Association Margaret E. Monroe Award for service to adults and an editor of The Reader’s Advisor Online, a website and blog aimed at readers’ advisory and collection development for public libraries. With an exciting sequence of programs for professional and paraprofessional staff scheduled for Friday, November 13th, APL’s By the Book event is designed to give attendees real-world readers’ advisory tips and techniques that they can implement in their libraries.
Cynthia Orr has over 30 years of experience with four different library systems in the areas of collection development, public service, management and readers’ advisory service. She is the former Collection Manager at Cleveland Public Library and has also been Fiction Selector and Director of Technical Services at Cuyahoga County Public Library in Ohio. She teaches Readers' Advisory Services for Kent State University's Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Ms. Orr is a member of the advisory board for Libraries Unlimited's The Reader's Advisor Online, and editor of its blog as well as a consultant for OverDrive.
Cynthia Orr will begin the morning session with a presentation on what library professionals should know about the reading habits of the public. Ms. Orr will also present an afternoon session on how to stay current in a rapidly changing environment and lead a breakout session about the future of readers’ advisory.
Attendees may choose to participate in two breakout sessions. Other topics, each led by APL staff, include conducting readers' advisory on the move, readers' advisory for children if you are not a children's librarian, and going Dewey-free. These sessions are designed to give attendees the opportunity to discuss current issues with colleagues facing the same challenges.
Librarians, library school students, and paraprofessional staff are all invited to join for By The Book: RA in a Dynamic World. The fee for registration is $65.00 (includes lunch). Student registrations are available for $25 (student ID required).
Registration must be received by Friday, November 6, 2009.

White House Conference on Library and Information Services
**Applications for White House Conference on Library and Information Services Award due April 15, 2009**
The White House Conference on Library and Information Services (WHCLIST) and the ALA Washington Office wish to announce the 2009 WHCLIST Award that provides a stipend of $300 to help defray the costs for a non-librarian participant to attend National Library Legislative Day (NLLD) May 11th and 12th in Washington, DC.
The criteria for the WHCLIST Award are:
The recipient should be a library supporter (trustee, friend, general supporter) and not a professional librarian.
Priority will be given to first-time attendees of NLLD.
Applicants must include a registration form, a letter of reference from a library director, school librarian, library board chair, friend's group chair or other library representative.
Representatives of WHCLIST and the ALA Washington office will choose the recipient. The ALA Washington Office will contact the recipient's Senators and Representatives to announce the award. The winner of the WHCLIST Award is announced at NLLD.
To apply for the WHCLIST award, please submit a completed NLLD registration form, a letter explaining why you should receive the award and a letter of reference to:

Join Albany Public Library as we celebrate our fifth annual By the Book Readers’ Advisory Conference! This year, we’re looking forward as we explore readers’ advisory in a Library 2.0 world. If you’ve heard a lot of about Library 2.0 and would like to learn more about it and how it relates to readers’ advisory, join us on Friday, November 14, 2008.
Our featured speakers will be Nora Rawlinson and Jessamyn West. Ms. Rawlinson is the co-founder and editor of Early Word, The Publisher | Librarian Connection (http://www.earlyword.com), a website and blog aimed at collection development for public libraries. Ms. West is a consulting librarian whose work focuses on technology issues and how they relate to libraries. With an exciting sequence of programs for professional and paraprofessional staff scheduled for Friday, November 14th, APL’s By the Book event is designed to give attendees real-world readers’ advisory tips and techniques that they can implement in their libraries.

Ms. Rawlinson is the former editor of Library Journal and former editor-in-chief of Publishers Weekly, as well as the former Head of Materials Selection for Baltimore County Public Library. Library Journal columns introduced under her editorship include PrePub Alert, the Collection Development series, Classic Returns, and Readers Shelf.
Jessamyn West will give a general presentation on Library 2.0 tools (what they are and how they work) and how they relate to readers’ advisory. In our afternoon session, Ms. West will explore Library 2.0 and readers’ advisory trends. She’ll also lead an afternoon breakout session in our computer lab where participants will enjoy hands-on experience trying out some of the Library 2.0 tools on their own.
Attendees may also choose to participate in either of our other afternoon breakout sessions on conducting readers’ advisory at the reference desk and in the stacks led by APL staff, or teen crossover titles and programming led by our own award-winning librarian Melissa Wasilewski. Ms. Wasilewski won YALSA’s “Excellence in Library Service to Young Adults” award for her Skateboarding Discussion Group program.

By The Book: Map for the Future – A Readers’ Advisory Conference Albany Public Library, Albany, NY November 15-16, 2007
Join Albany Public Library as we look toward the future of readers’ advisory in our fourth annual By the Book conference. Our featured speakers will be Neal Wyatt, Collection Management Librarian for Chesterfield County Public Library, Chesterfield, VA, and Michael B. Gannon, Associate Director for Administrative Services for Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, Hyattsville, MD. With an exciting slate of programs for professional and paraprofessional staff scheduled for Friday, November 16, APL’s By the Book is designed to give attendees real-world readers’ advisory tips and techniques that they can implement in their home libraries.
Neal Wyatt will discuss reading maps, a recent cover topic in “Library Journal,” and she’ll also lead afternoon breakout sessions designed to give you hands on experience with this new and exciting RA tool. Reading maps offer librarians a varied and wide range of options for connecting readers with books that go beyond the traditional appeal factors.
Michael B. Gannon will share with us his advice for making the most of book covers when offering readers’ advisory services to readers. We’ll also look beyond providing readers’ advisory for very popular genres like mystery and romance: Mr. Gannon, also the author of Blood, Bedlam, Bullets, and Badguys: A Reader’s Guide to Adventure/Suspense Fiction, will lead an afternoon breakout session on reaching out to readers of adventure and suspense fiction.
Explore one of the most in-demand new genres, urban fiction, with Albany Public Library’s own urban fiction RA expert Scott Jarzombek, Branch Librarian. Plus we’ll expand our breakout sessions to include children’s and young adult RA with Jendy Murphy, Head of APL’s Gerald D. Jennings Children’s Library.
Attendees at this year’s event are invited to join us Thursday night for refreshments and a chance to share the “Best of the Book Groups.” Bring your favorite book group title and tell us why it worked for you! The $65 registration fee also includes breakfast and lunch on Friday, November 16; student registrations are $25 (student ID required).
