Letters of Interest and Resumes for Temporary Post Due on or Before Jan. 11, 2016
The Albany Public Library (APL) Board of Trustees is seeking interested candidates to fill a temporary vacancy due to the resignation last month of Daniel Curtis. The chosen candidate will serve until the May election.
The Nominating Committee of the APL Board of Trustees is asking interested candidates to submit a resume and a letter of interest by Jan. 11. The committee will review submissions and then conduct interviews the week of Jan. 25. The selected candidate will be appointed at the Feb. 9 board meeting and immediately start serving a four-month term.
The library will run an election on May 17 for city voters to elect a trustee to fulfill the final year of Curtis’ term. Candidates interested in the temporary trustee appointment to the APL board must submit a resume and a letter of interest on or before 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, to:

Albany school budget, library budget and library trustee vote Tuesday, May 19, 7 a.m.-9 p.m.
Voting for library board, the library budget, AND school budget will be held Tuesday, May 19, along with balloting for two tax-free facilities projects, including one that would provide a new turf athletic field at Albany High School.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. city-wide. The polls may or may NOT be at the same place one votes in the general election.

Results of Library Trustee Election
On May 20, voters in the city of Albany elected two new trustees — Alison Calacone and Andrew Bechard — to the Albany Public Library Board of Trustees.
The new trustees will begin five-year terms in July. This is Bechard’s second election to the library board, which he joined in 2008 as an appointed trustee. This is the first election for Calacone. She replaces Holly McKenna, who chose not to run for a second board term.
The place order, candidates, and vote totals (according to Tuesday night’s unofficial results) were:
1. Alison Calacone — 1,501
2. Andrew Bechard — 1,263
3. Anthony Gooding — 749
4. Jose Lopez — 529

FLAT ALBANY PUBLIC LIBRARY BUDGET FOR 2015; 2 Trustee seats open
For the second year in a row, the library's Board of Trustees has approved a flat budget that results in no tax levy increase.
"The library trustees are committed to maintaining current spending levels for the coming year in order to give taxpayers a little relief from their tax burden," said APL Executive Director Carol Nersinger. "The administration has worked hard to make the most out of our current budget so we can continue operating seven wonderful neighborhood libraries for the people of Albany."
The 2015 library operations budget is $6,434,764 -- the same amount as the 2013 and 2014 spending plans. Because the budget does not raise the tax levy, the library is not required to put it out for a public vote. Approval by the library's trustees, which was unanimously given at its March meeting, is all that is required for the flat spending plan to become official.
The library does have two trustee seats that are up for election on May 20. Potential candidates must submit petitions to the City School District of Albany by 5 pm on Monday, April 21.

Two Albany Public Library Board Seats Up for Election in May
The Albany Public Library Board of Trustees has two positions that are up for election on Tuesday, May 20.
The two open trustee positions carry full five-year terms that start on July 1. The library’s nine-member Board of Trustees is charged with making the rules, regulations, and policies under which the seven-location library system operates. The expiring terms are currently held by Holly McKenna and Andrew Bechard.
In order to run for a seat on the APL board, candidates must meet the following criteria: be at least 18-years-old, a citizen of the United States, a resident of the city of Albany, registered to vote in the November 2013 general election, and submit a valid nominating petition.
Nominating petitions are available at all Albany Public Library locations and online.
Completed nominating petitions (including at least 57 valid signatures) must be returned to the Clerk of the City School District of Albany by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 21.
The board is hosting an optional information session for people interested in running for library trustee on Saturday, April 5, at 2 pm in conference room #1 at the Main Library (161 Washington Avenue). Current trustees will participate in a moderated panel discussion about the work of the board, why they decided to run for office, and their experiences as candidates and board members.

John Davis Elected APL Trustee
John Davis was elected to the APL Board of Trustees in the May 21 vote.
According to the unofficial results, Davis received 1,952 votes and Jose Lopez, the other candidate, received 530 votes.
Davis will be sworn in as library trustee within the next few days. He will serve for two years (the unexpired portion of the late Mimi Mounteer’s term).
The next APL Board of Trustees meeting is Tuesday, June 11, at 5:30 pm at the Howe Branch.

APL Seeking Trustee Candidates
The Albany Public Library Board of Trustees has three seats that are up for election on Tuesday, May 15. This includes seats currently held by board chair Dennis Gaffney, who, I am told, has chosen not to run again, and Mary Ellen O'Connor, who cannot run again because of term limits. Leonard Ricchiuti is the third trustee whose term expires in 2012.
Anyone interested in running for a seat on the board should pick up a candidate packet at the Reference Desk in the Main Library. The packet contains a nominating petition and directions. There are several requirements for candidates, including the collection of 141 signatures on the petition. The number of signatures required is related to the number of votes at the previous year's election.
Completed nominating petitions are due to the City School District of Albany (School Administration Building in Academy Park) by April 16. The school district clerk can be reached at 475-6010.

Please take time on Tuesday to go out and vote on the library budget and trustee candidates. Polling places are open from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. You vote on the library budget at the same place where you vote on the school district budget. 2012 Library Budget Facts
The proposed 2012 total library tax levy is $8,796,596 and was unanimously approved by the elected Board of Trustees. The tax levy pays for the library's operating budget and the Branch Improvement Plan, which was approved by voters in February 2007. The 2012 tax levy is an increase of $1.7 million over the current year.
An Albany resident with a $150,000 home will pay approximately an additional $47.38 next year for the library, or about 91 cents each week.
The proposed budget allows the library to keep the doors open at all seven libraries in the newly expanded and improved system, including two brand-new and three renovated neighborhood branches. The increase will also add a few hours a week at the branches and some needed improvements at the Main Library. Two library trustee seats are also up for election.

VOTE YES on May 18
The City of Albany has four, soon to be five new, or greatly refurbished branches, and will need staff and operating expenses to keep the doors open. Please vote YES on the library budget. Also, vote for Candidates for the APL Board of Trustees; two positions are open.

One Library Trustee Seat Open for Election
Albany Public Library will be asking City of Albany voters to vote to fill one position on the Library Board of Trustees in the May 20th Albany City School District Election. The vacancy occurred due to the death of longtime Trustee John Bach. The Library Board appointed Lois Parsons to serve as Trustee until the next election. The person elected to this seat will serve the unexpired portion of the term (1 year remaining) commencing at the June 10 meeting of the APL Board.
Any Albany resident who was registered to vote in the November 2007 general election is eligible to run for the Board of Trustees. Candidates must collect a minimum of 101 valid signatures and file their petitions with the Clerk of the City School District of Albany by 4:30 pm on Monday, April 21st. The Library also asks that candidates notify Interim Library Director Tim Burke his/her candidacy by providing copies of their nominating petition to him by the above date and time. Nominating Petitions and instructions may be picked up from Tim Burke at the Main Library.
